What farmers and food producers should know about Modified Atmosphere

Posted on 23 July 2021

There are countless ways to ‘get rid’ of pests and insects in food produce like rice. But is the way you’ve always done it really the best one? Let’s look at why Modified Atmosphere Packaging is a great alternative for ‘traditional’ pest management in rice products.

Pest control, the traditional way

Although Modified Atmosphere isn’t new, a lot of farmers are still not familiar with it or don’t think it's a solution they could work with. After harvesting their product, they take the old route: they clean their produce with CO2. This fumigation method kills all the insects in 24 to 48 hours. After that, the product gets put in Big Bags, they close them and ship them to their next destination.

But, once those bags reach their destination, and they're opened, we often see that around 30% of them are rendered useless: insects have somehow found their way back into the bags and are alive and kicking.

The result? Those bags have to be fumigated again, a costly process. And an unnecessary one. By tweaking the supply chain just a little, time, money and product can be saved, thanks to Modified Atmosphere.

Why Modified Atmosphere Packaging is the better alternative

Regular Big Bags don't offer the protection you need to keep your products pest-free. Modified Atmosphere Packaging means creating and maintaining levels of oxygen and other gasses in the bag that don’t just kill, but also inhibit the growth of new pests. This means you can skip the expensive process of fumigation and re-fumigation, and work with a sustainable, chemical-free solution that has plenty of other benefits for your business, and the environment.
