Plastic waste as the bricks for the future’s foundation
Recycling and minimizing waste are two of the most important factors in creating a more sustainable future. So, we do both.
About the project
The plastic recycling program 'Plastic waste: building blocks for the future' offers hope for the future of children, young people and women in Côte d'Ivoire.
Ivory Coast has a huge waste problem. Every day, more than 288,000 kilos of plastic from the city of Abidjan end up in landfills in the poorer areas. Only 5 percent of plastic is sold for recycling, mainly by young people and women.
Unfortunately, this yields far too little. 1.6 million children and young people in the West African country do not go to school. With Plastic Bricks, UNICEF ensures that the plastic is recycled into building blocks for classrooms.
What does UNICEF do?
UNICEF trains mothers and young people in the collection and safe processing of plastic waste. They also receive training in entrepreneurship, so that they can set up their own companies. At their recycling factory, UNICEF buys the plastic waste directly from the women for a fair price. The factory processes the plastic waste into building blocks, which are used for the construction of new classrooms. This way, UNICEF creates a cleaner living environment for children and ensures that children can go to school.
