In some cases during transport or an unforeseen event at the warehouse, an FIBC will have to spend the night - or day - outside, exposed to the elements. Is this an issue? How can you make sure your product remains safe, and the bag too?
Can FIBCs be used outside?
There’s not just one answer. It depends. Not just on the product inside, but also on the type of bag, and the environment it will be kept in. A scorching hot day in Egypt can’t be compared to a rainy day in Holland, and your bag will notice the difference too.
Bulk bags are great at protecting your products, but only if you protect them from external influences as well. Exposure to heat, moisture and UV rays can have a big impact on the quality of your FIBC, making the material more fragile.
What does UV light do to FIBCs?
FIBCs are made of polypropylene, which can degrade when exposed to (too much) UV radiation. This means the bag might no longer meet the safety standards.
What does moisture do to FIBCs?
While bulk bags work as a barrier against moisture for your products, this doesn't always mean they are waterproof. In those cases, water could get in the bag - be it from rain or the ground.
How does temperature affect FIBCs?
Both heat and cold can cause degrading of the bags, meaning they become more prone to tearing. Degrading can start at temperatures above 21 degrees Celsius/70 degrees Fahrenheit. Cold temperatures can cause the material to deteriorate, with big consequences for your product.
So, can you store Bulk Bags outside?
After this article, you might be inclined to not do it. Better safe than sorry, right. If however the situation arises that you have no choice but to store your big bags outside, make sure you cover them up to protect them from the elements. As for your products, you can add special liners to keep them safe.
