Coated and Uncoated FIBC Bulk Bags

Posted on 30 June 2022

Having the possibility of creating a tailor-made bag has great benefits, but can also raise many questions. Countless factors can be altered to make a unique FIBCs, from their shape to the liner. Anything to create a big bag that is just right for your product and application. In this blog, we shine a light on yet another aspect, the coating of the bag.

Liners are either attached on the outside or inside of the bag and have many benefits in protecting the product. Let’s start with the basics: an uncoated FIBC.

Uncoated Big Bags

Big Bags are typically made by woven strands of polypropylene. Because of the weaved construction, very fine materials like powders can seep through the weave or sew lines. Sometimes, this isn’t a problem. Some products even need to breathe. When it is a problem though, a coated bag or lined bag can offer a solution.

But it's not only about the product itself getting out. It is also a risk if something enters the bag through these small openings. From air to moisture, in some cases, it is critical to keep the product safe from any unwanted external risks.

Coated Bulk Bags

That is when a coating can be of help too. The construction of a coated bag is similar to that of an uncoated bag, but before sewing the bag together, an additional polypropylene layer is added to the bag’s fabric, sealing the small gaps in the weaves. This extra layer can be added in- or outside the bag or even on both sides.

This additional coating provides a simple barrier and an added layer of protection for your product - keeping it safely inside and better protected from external factors. Coated bags are, therefore, a popular product to store and transport powdered products or for any product that needs (basic) protection against contamination risks.
